Moss is the humble hero of our gardens and may have an important role to play in the regeneration of our planet, but what makes this plant so unique?

  1. Sphagnum mosses are some of the best air-fixers out there; they slow climate change by storing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. This fantastic ability is affected by human activity. In Siberia, peat bogs are currently thawing for the first time in 11'000 years, releasing billions of tons of methane, which is even more destructive than Co2.
  2. Moss tastes terrible to most garden creatures but provides a safe home for beneficial insects, small lizards and frogs.
  3. Moss reduces flooding. Heavy rainfall can wash away soil nutrients, but mosses greatly help to slow the water entering the soil and prevent damage. Planting mosses along ditches and rooftops not only reduces the impact of flash flood water run-off but adds insulation, cooling and water filtration.

Moss does not require any fertiliser or pesticide to grow and can be used in many ways around the garden. If a moss roof is too extreme, why not try and introduce moss to your lawn. Moss lawns have a beautiful, ethereal look and do not need mowing. Protect the moss patches already in your space, and try to avoid damage where possible.

Moss is a fantastic resource for flower arrangers, with its ability to retain moisture and its attractive soft texture. What's not to like?! 🎉

I love the idea of moss in gardens. It looks superb on logs and stones and is certainly a good habitat for tiny creatures.
